. Emona Street, Ljubljana

Plan: 1932
Built: 1932
Commissioner: Municipality of Ljubljana

Address: Emonska cesta, Ljubljana
Access: open

The arrangement of the Emona road is based on the idea that it should function as a visual lengthening of the “monumental” Vegova Street. He placed the fences, walls and planted the trees. Emona road ends with the Trnovo Bridge in front of the Trnovo Church.

Plečnik worked on the remains of the Roman wall and the 18th century Krakovo chapel attached to it. The chapel was probably designed by the Baroque architect Candid Zulliani. It contains the oldest middle age Christian statue in Ljubljana – the relief of Mary holding a baby in her arms – dating back in 1260. The relief is probably preserved as a part of an old portal (tympanum) from the original church. In 1740, after the earthquake, the new baroque sanctuary was build where the church used to be and the statue was relocated in to the Krakovo chapel.
