. Monument to Simon Gregorčič, Ljubljana

Plan: 1936-1937
Built: 1937 (Unveiled: September 5, 1937)
Commissioner: Municipality of Ljubljana

Address: French Revolution Square, Ljubljana
Access: open

The monument is dedicated to the Slovene poet Simon Gregorčič (1844-1906). Plečnik designed the statue by using classical architectural elements to illustrate the poet’s verses. He lifted the statue to a stone pedestal which resembles a Roman offering altar – an antique ara (altar) in terms of proportions. He placed it in front of a barred window and surrounded it with tetrapylon. The shores of tetrapylon were initially connected into a pergola which he, probably due to wearing out, replaced with arches made out of artificial stone (he was forced to use cheap substitutes). He put architrave on top of “the cup of life” (from Simon Gregorčič’s poem the Cup of Life).
