Vegova Street, Ljubljana
THE WAY HOME
Plan: 1929-1942
Built: 1929-1942
Commissioner: Municipality of Ljubljana
Address: Vegova ulica, Ljubljana
Access: open
The street runs along the old city wall. It used to be a ditch. Plečnik renewed a part of the preserved wall and turned it into an elevated park. Vegova Street is a part of the town planning of the so called town main road which leads from Plečnik's home behind the Trnovo church to the Southern square and was suppose to continue behind the transverse axle of the Zvezda Park.
Plečnik started the renovation of the street at the same time as the renovation of the front facade of the Glasbena matica. (This renovation is not preserved; the pillars supporting the balcony have been moved to Navje cemetery, and the balcony balustrade was used in renovations of the Stranje church.)
At the edge of the park, he placed statues of composers and later statues of the Slovene linguists. The composers statue pedestals were made out of remains of the old opera fence and the stone staircase use to be a part of the city hall. The landscape design was made by Anton Lap, a gardener; statues were sculptured by Lojze Dolinar, Lojze Gorše and Boris Kalin.
