Home of Religious Retreat was at the beginning only an extension to the Jesuit convent and the Church of St. Joseph. The demands of the city management were that the extension agrees with the existing building. But Plečnik did not take that into consideration: »if it was up to me – I would put rough coating on it and than arrange gorgeous karst-marble figures on it.« (Plečnik's comment in his letter to Suhadolc.)
During the age of modernism, architect Lado Kham designed the staircase with balconies which was added to the extension.
