The square characterizes Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces, the occupied Slovenia during 1809 and 1813. Napoleon pillar stands in the square (in the axle of Vegova street), the Gregorčič monument is placed on its north side and the walls of Križanke on the south side. At the unveiling of Napoleon monument on October the 13th 1929, Plečnik also planed the decoration of the square. In the 50s he also planed the eksedra on the west side, but it was never realized. After World War 2, the square was paved.
